Free Keyword Search Tools to Plan Your Content, Blog Posts and Articles

If you have an online business, you will need to create content. This might be in the form of website product pages, course creation, blog posts or videos for your YouTube channel. Either way, you will no doubt need to do some keyword research, to make sure that you are creating content that your audience wants and are actively searching for on Google.

To make this task a little easier for you, we have listed 4 free keyword tools below that you can use to get started (there are LOADS more than this so if you want to know more, have a search on Google).

Google Keyword Tool.

This is obviously the daddy of keyword search, given that it is Google!  It is a free tool that will provide monthly estimates for any keyword that you can think of. It will also generate plenty of other ideas for you, so it’s a great starting point and takes a lot of the hard work out.  Google will make you jump through a couple of hoops to get the specific search volumes for each keyword (rather than providing broad estimates that don’t mean anything e.g. 100-1k searches, 1k-10k searches) but it’s worth it for the insight.

Keywords Everywhere.

This is a handy free Chrome extension which will estimate monthly search results for any search term you enter on Google. The results are shown immediately and even include other related terms and ideas. If you wanted to subscribe to their paid service, you would also see monthly search volume, cost per click and competition date for your keywords.

You will even see search results when using the search facility on other sites such as Amazon and YouTube but do note - that the search volumes provided are for Google. In the image below, directly underneath the search bar, you can see the Google search volume of 90,500 per month with an average CPC (cost per click) of 0.48 and a competition rating of 1 - for the search term Bluetooth Speaker.

Ubersuggest.

This is Neil Patel’s own keyword search tool. It has an incredibly simple and easy to navigate interface and is great for providing you with keyword ideas for your main topic area. Everything listed below is available with a free account!

If you have a huge list of keywords, you won’t want to use this tool as it only allows one keyword search at a time, so I’d recommend using Google Keyword Planner first and then for your best keywords - using this tool to get even more insight and data for pages and articles that are ranking high for your chosen search terms.

It will even provide content ideas, showing you the number of social shares for Facebook and Pinterest as well as the SEO data for these top-performing pages. This will give you a very good idea of how strong the competition is for these search terms and how likely you will get your content seen too.

Google Search Bar.

If you’re feeling totally uninspired and have no idea what keywords or search terms your audience is using to find content on your topic - a very simple and quick way to get a complete list of keywords together is to do a simple Google Search.

It really doesn’t get any easier. As you start typing a search term, Google will suggest various search terms based on what people are already searching for. Make sure you include all of these.

In the results, it will show questions that Google users are currently searching for (related to your search term)

And at the bottom of the page, it will also show the related search terms people are currently using.

And if you are using the Keywords Everywhere browser extension - you will see the estimated search volumes for each search term as well. Making this a very simple and quick way to do some keyword research.

Make sure you use all 3 of these to create your list of keywords and then run them through the Google Keyword Planner to check search volumes.

Keyword research is not a quick task and instead is something you will probably find yourself having to do regularly to make sure your content is current and in demand. Set up a system where you can do this weekly or monthly so that you can keep your ideas fresh and also make sure that all of your content, articles, blogs or web pages are search engine optimised with your keyword search terms.

I hope this has been useful, as always, please feel free to ask a question or share your ideas in the comments below.
