3 Essential Elements of Creating Great Sales Copy Writing

Selling services or products over the Internet can be done in two ways. You can either sell through catalog style e-commerce marketing or through direct response marketing.

Black and Gray Laptop Computer With Turned-on Screen Beside Person Holding Red Smart Card

Catalog style e-commerce marketing involves getting a range of services or products with their functions and uses in front of the eyes of prospective buyers. The buyer makes his choices based on the information he sees. In contrast to this direct response marketing often involves selling only one product or service. The buyer has only two choices which are to buy or not to buy. These choices are not always easy, but they are immensely rewarding if you can get it done.

In regards to direct response internet marketing, the goal of your sales copy writing is to motivate your reader to respond to your call to action. There's a very specific set of skills you need to develop if you want to succeed. What's most important is you must master the art of creating killer sales copy writing.

Writer at work

You should focus on these 3 elements to be effective.
First you need to utilize an attention grabbing headline. It must influence the reader to stop what he or she is doing and immediately be inclined to seek more information. In online marketing I've observed with most solo ads that work you will find a strong headline. I would suggest you put the main benefit of your product into your headline. You should focus on it's benefit and not it's features. Let's say you are selling an automated blog post making software.
As an example if you write "New Software Makes Automatic Blog Posts To Your Blog" that would be writing about the feature. However if you write "Discover How You Can Update Your Blog on Autopilot and Never Have to Look at it again for One Entire Year" that is writing about benefit.

The second way to make a captivating headline is by writing something in your headline that puts a question into the mind of your reader. It should be something that makes the reader think the answer must be in the body of your offer. When you read the headline your question is probably going to be 'How is this accomplished?
The content of your sales copy writing must be engaging. Words must be written for the sole purpose of getting your readers attention. Here's one simple technique to accomplish that.

Think about how people pass buckets down a line to put out a fire. Each person passes a bucket of water to the next person until it reaches the end of the line and the water is poured onto the fire. That is exactly what your sales copy must do. It must move the reader to read the next line and subsequently the next paragraph until he comes to the end.

To achieve that each sentence must connect to something in the next sentence that your reader wants to discover. And the last sentence of each paragraph must leave the reader with some missing piece of the puzzle such that he is compelled to continue reading. Look at the last line of each paragraph of this article. Can you see how it is done?
By using certain words like 'if' or 'you must be a master at' you covertly challenge the reader to seek what he does not yet know. Another way is by stipulating a certain number of points beforehand. By not covering all your points at once the reader will conclude there are more points to be covered in the next paragraph and reads on.

Another way your writing can resemble passing water buckets down a line is by using the last line of a paragraph to introduce what's in the next. Yet another way is to pose a question in the last sentence. These are additional tips for great sales copy writing.
Great sales copy must have a clear call to action at the end. Your call to action must be compelling enough for your reader to take the action you desire. This can be made more convincing by answering your reader's objection. One way you can accomplish this is by comparing the price of your product with another similar product, or challenging the reader to make a change by buying your product instead of remaining where he currently is.
Holiday Shopping from Smartphone

Creating a clear call to action is a whole other topic by which can be written about in another article. I've listed in this article 3 key elements of great sales copy writing and other tidbits you should be able to use to increase the quality of your sales copy. Try everything I've mentioned and you will eventually see the results you've been looking for!

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

by SUSAN FRIESEN

How a Few Words Can Increase Social Media Engagement

I’m sure you’ve noticed there’s no shortage of social media techniques and tips out there!

But have you also noticed the majority of those tips focus on general info, like how to get more followers or likes, or how to post compelling content to engage your users?

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

Those resources are important, but I notice that sometimes hashtags get forgotten about.

They’re rarely mentioned in marketing articles, but they’re such a great tool for building your brand, raising awareness around marketing campaigns and engaging/entertaining your audience.

How Do Hashtags Work?

If you’re new to social media, I know it can seem overwhelming.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

You may have seen these words with the # in front of them on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest. (The hashtag actually got its start in 2007, when Twitter began using it to index keywords to make them more searchable.)

But what are these words supposed to do? Should you use them? Why are they seemingly random?

I’ve put together this guide to help you understand how to use hashtags (and what the heck they are!) so you can increase social media engagement and leads.

Think of hashtags as a way to categorize your content.

Ultimately, they help people find and share posts on a specific topic.

When you create your social media post, you take a word or words and put the pound sign (#) in front of it. If you use two words, don’t put a space between them. Now, the phrase is clickable and searchable on the social media platform the user is on.

Choosing the Right Hashtags

When done correctly, these tags can help you gain more exposure for your business and increase social media engagement. But like any social media strategy, you have to do your research and think before you post.

I’ll make this process easier for you. Here are 7 ways to start choosing the right hashtags:

Create them for events.

This is one of the best ways to increase excitement and engagement on your social media accounts.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

For example, the Cornucopia wine festival in Whistler shared many posts on their Twitter and Instagram accounts with the hashtag #Cornucopia2019, and so did their followers and attendees.

Tag famous people or big brands.

Take a look at what’s trending on Twitter, and try and incorporate it into your posts; but only if it’s relevant. People are going to know if you’re trying to force it or be fake.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

Some examples are big sporting events, record releases by musicians, holidays and popular books. If someone who’s famous in your industry makes the news, you could use that tag in one of your posts.

Do your research.

Whether you are doing research on the latest news for an upcoming Canadian Federal election or hockey playoffs, you could do a hashtag search to find several posts on the subject.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

Searching tags on social media platforms can be a perfect way to find new ideas and spy on your competition.

A great resource for searching popular hashtags is https://hashtagify.me/hashtag/tbt

Encourage sharing.

The more people who share your hashtag and use it in their posts, the more exposure, engagement and traffic you’re going to get.

You may remember Coca Cola's #ShareACoke campaign. The company swapped out its iconic logo on 20-ounce bottles, replacing it with 250 of the most popular American names.

It was one of their most successful campaigns, leading to a 2% increase in soft-drink sales and lots of social media engagement as followers shared cans and bottles with their names on them. 5. Turn one tag into a campaign. Many users “monitor” certain words, so focusing on one consistently can help you gain a following.

For instance, you could come up with a campaign with several posts around a specific product you offer, or a holiday promotion you’re doing.

Find some weekly post themes.

This is a simple way to tie in a trending tag with your business.

Some common themes include #throwbackthursday, where people post anything from past vacation pics to high school graduation photos; and #wisdomwednesday, where they share their advice on all sorts of topics.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

I use #MotivationMonday and #TuesdayTip on our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram channels and often mix in other popular hashtags for optimal exposure.

Use humour.

People love to share funny stuff with others, whether it’s a trending meme or a relatable story. Here’s a hashtag late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon came up with to get people to share: #MyWorstCostume.

The Entrepreneur’s Beginner’s Guide to Hashtags

By understanding which hashtags will resonate with your target audience, you can tap into a whole world of people looking for exactly what you’re offering. So start brainstorming and researching how to add some fun and functional tags to your next post!

Learn How To Be More Successful At Blogging

When you are starting to blog, it is important that you never give up. You are not going to get a lot of readers your first day, and even your first week, and that is okay. Just keep writing what you are passionate about, and the readers will come to you.

If you are planning to start up your own blog, think carefully about what you want to write about. Don't just write about what you think others will want to hear. You must write about what you like and what interests you most. By writing what you love, your blog posts will jump out with exciting, interesting information!

Learn How To Be More Successful At Blogging

Don't go too broad with your posts. If you have different skills, try using them on a specific topic. Creating broad blog posts in an uncontrollable way can make your brand dissolve. Even if you have readers that are interested in various topics, you're making it harder for people to recognize your single brand.

Since blogs are written on a more personal level, you should avoid writing in formal tones. This will make it easier for the reader to relate to you on a personal level. This will keep your readers coming back later on to read more of the blogs you write.

Create an email update list for your blog. On your site, offer a place for people to sign up for these updates and send them out every time you post a new blog. Those who are truly interested in following your blog will like the idea of being notified when new content is posted.

When writing blog posts, it is critical to choose great titles. Try to add some keywords in your title, but keep it short and sweet. With a little thought and creativity, you can come up with short, catchy, interesting titles that will draw readers in. Add a couple of meaningful key words and you will have readers in no time!

Make sure that your blog posts are structured well in order to make scanning easier. Make use of lists, header tags, and more. Keep in mind that the average reader is not going to want to read sentences and paragraphs that are really long. Therefore, you should make them as short and to the point as possible.

Now that you are more aware and informed about online blogging, do not hesitate to put these insights to work for you immediately. Blogging can be enjoyable and a big boost to your business, if you take the time to do it with sincerity and knowledge. Do You Need an Instagram Account for Your Business? A Brief Introduction...

If you are thinking about starting an Instagram account for your business, it look as though you are on the right track (and certainly not alone!). There are some pretty impressive usage stats, last updated on Omincore on 18th July 2019, which include;

  • Total Number of Monthly Active Instagram Users: 1 billion +
  • Total Number of Daily Active Instagram Users: 500 million +
  • Instagram Stories Daily Active Users: 500 million +
  • Number of Photos Shared to Date: 50 billion +
  • Number of Businesses on Instagram: 25 million + (source)

With that sheer volume of usage for both personal and business, I realised that this was certainly a channel that I want to leverage for my businesses.

What is Instagram?

Instagram is like Facebook and Twitter in as far as it's a social media platform where users create, like and share posts - which appear in a newsfeed. The difference with Instagram is it's emphasis on visual sharing. You have to upload a picture or video in order to post and then can add text commentary.

You can follow key influencers on Instagram and interact with them and their followers by liking posts, commenting and replying and private messaging. And you can search for content or images for specific subjects by using hashtags.

Lifewire has a really useful introduction for Instagram in their blog post; What Is Instagram, Anyway?

How Often Should you Post?

According to a post on Social Buddy (How often should you post on Instagram in 2019)

the optimum number of posts a day is between 1 and 3 - but this can differ between profiles.

They suggest that major brands are averaging 1.5 posts per day and recommend that you start by posting several times, slowing reducing the frequency to find your optimum amount. The most important thing being that you are consistent with your content, which is true of all content marketing and social media marketing.

They also recommend that you go with the “quality over quantity”  approach, which again is true across all platforms and online content distribution.

What are Instagram Stories?

The idea behind Instagram Stories was for users to be able to share snippets of their day with their followers, quickly and easily. This could be as a series of images or videos, which would then become a slideshow when it has been posted onto Instagram. Instagram Stories only stay live for 24 hours and then they disappear - like Snapchat.

The reason Instagram users like Stories is that they are featured at the top of the home page, beating all other posts and the algorithm. Then if you are to add another part to the story, it gets bumped back up to the top of the feed. Instagram will even post a reminder in the feed about stories that are due to expire to give followers another prompt to see your story before it is removed.
You can read more about Instagram Stories on Louisem.com's blog This Is Why You Need To Use Instagram Stories Right Now

How to get Followers on Instagram

Now the point of social media marketing is to build an audience that you can connect to and share content with. In order to do this - you will need to get people to follow you. Easier said than done, particularly when you are fighting to be heard amongst the 1 billion other users.

A post on later.com has an interesting and detailed article, on this subject and provides 8 different ways to get more Instagram followers. [see blog post here; 8 New Ways to Get More Instagram Followers in 2019

In summary these are:

  1. Making sure you have a branded and complete Instagram profile
  2. Using hashtags and location tags in your Instagram Stories
  3. Sharing selfies (apparently these really work!)
  4. Using Instagram Ads
  5. Cross-promoting your Instagram content across other platforms
  6. Creating a Custom Instagram Stories Filter For Your Brand
  7. Collaborating with leading brands to get exposure to their followers
  8. Creating relationships with leading influencers to be exposed to their followers

These are pretty basic tips, but they will be enough to get your started. I will be investing a lot of time into Instagram and will be more than happy to share my learnings, insight and successes as I go.

In the meantime, I hope this was helpful and I will leave you with a really useful Instagram Infographic from Social Media Pilot

What is a customer Avatar and why would you need one...?

A customer avatar is a profile that represents your ideal customer. It's a very specific and detailed view of the type of customer you want to attract into your business. When I say specific, I'm not kidding! You want to give your customer avatar a name, an age, a relationship status.... you want to know what type of job they have, what car they drive, what they like doing, their aspirations and so on.

The more detail you can go into, the better.

Why is a customer avatar important for your business?

  • It's essential to your success to know who you are trying to attract - how could you reach them otherwise?
  • To avoid broad targeting and have a better chance of attracting the customer you actually want.
  • If you try to appeal to everyone, the likelihood is that you won't appeal to anyone (you can't be all things to all people)
  • If you know exactly who you are trying to attract, you can create marketing messages and sales copy that they resonate with them effectively.

But this reduce my reach and so my ability to increase sales and profit?

  • No. Because you are being very specific, your advertising is much more targeted and your copy and messages are more likely to attract your desired audience. This means that ad costs will go down and your sales and conversion rates will go up!
  • By being more specific with your niche you are increasing your chances of being seen. If you target too broad a niche, your advertising will be swallowed up by trying to compete with the big players.
  • You are more likely to reach people that will become avid fans, referrers and repeat purchases as you will be adapting your products or services around them

OK, so you have created a customer avatar. Now what?

Great! This will help give your business much more focus and clarity!  There are many ways you can use your customer avatar.

  • Now you you know who your customer is, you can reveal their pain points and identify the problems that they need to solve
  • You can create your content around this, making your brand and product or service very appealing to your target audience.
  • When paying for advertising, use your customer avatar to target your audience effectively and efficiently. This will avoid huge advertising costs being wasted on audiences that aren't genuinely interested.
  • Not only will your targeting be more effective, but your copy and creative will also generate better results.
  • Everyone in your business should be familiar with your customer avatar, particularly those that are likely to come in contact with them and affect their experience with your brand.
  • You will be able to create and develop products more specifically around their needs
  • Your email marketing will become more presonalised and develop a stronger and longer last relationship

What information should you include when creating your ideal customer?

  • As I mentioned before, it's time to get specific. Really Specific. Try including all of the following information;
  • You should include their age, sex, income range, relationship status, familial set up, likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, fears, desires, what they read, what they watch, where they work, what they drive and much more.
  • Anything and everything to help you connect with them on an emotional level is key.
  • Give them a name and even take it another step further and find an image online that you can use for them.

We hope that post was helpful. Please feel free to comment below with any additional ideas you'd like to discuss or to ask any questions.
