We all have an idea about the type of content we want to put out there; what we would like to write about, what we think our audience wants to read and what we think would make a great lead magnet or free gift for them - but how do we really know?
And does it make sense to spend hours creating content when you don’t know for sure that your audience actually wants it?
The simple answer, of course, is No… it does not.
What you think your audience wants and what they actually want might be quite different.
You might even need to bridge a gap between what they consider to be their issue and what your solution for their real problem is.
This is even more important when creating course content - you want to create content that sells because it is needed. If you get this wrong you could spend months putting together a training course only for it to flop as you had misunderstood what your target market actually wants.
So before you take a deep dive into your laptop and get your creative juices flowing - just stop for a moment and think about where your target market is hanging out online - then go listen to their conversations. See what they are really crying out for and then can create a solution just for them.
Here are 3 ways you can do this to make sure that your content is top-notch and exactly what your audience is looking for:
- Facebook Groups
Join Facebook groups that your target audience is likely to hang out in. They are really easy to find, just use the search bar in facebook to search for relevant accounts and select groups from the top menu bar.
This will give you all the Facebook groups related to the term that you searched for. You will usually find groups that you can join for free.
Once your request has been approved, you will be able to have a good look through the posts to see what types of questions people are asking, the solutions they are seeking and the problems and challenges they are voicing.
You can take this further and join in the conversations - offering your own advice and solutions. This will help you build credibility and position you as an expert. From here you will even be able to ask those interacting with you what kind of content they would find valuable and test out some ideas with them.
Just make sure you don’t spam, or use the groups to blatantly promote yourself - instead use it to offer help and gain insight and a much deeper understanding of your customer avatar. This will be more valuable than spamming groups and getting banned!
2. Twitter Conversations
You can use hashtags to search conversations related to your niche - on Twitter.
You can either browse the trending hashtags or enter keywords, topics and phrases as search terms or hashtags into the search box to see the conversations that people are having around this subject.
Play around with it and try different search terms, phrases and even questions to get a good idea of what people are struggling with, what help they need and what they are looking for.
You will be surprised at the amount of information that people are willing to share publicly!
You can also use lists on Twitter to follow similar companies and brands in your niche - monitor them to see what content they are creating and which posts are getting shared and like the most. Lists are really simple to set up - simply create a list from the List tab - then when you are on other companies' profile you can add them to your list.
3. Ask Your Audience
If you already have a following, whether this is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or an email list - just ask! Ask them how you can help them further and what content they will find valuable. Ask them what problems they are facing and what solutions they are looking for. Test out different content ideas and see which are the most popular.
For example…. Run a Facebook poll. In your own group or another group, create a poll asking members to vote from a range of options. If you have some idea of the content you want to provide or even want to test different topic ideas why not just ask?
Or…. Send a quick email out to your list. Let them know that you are planning your content for the next 3 months and want to make sure it’s as valuable and helpful as possible. Give them the opportunity to get involved and address the biggest challenges in their business. It’s free advice at the end of the day, so why wouldn’t they want to tell you?
It’s simple to get this information from an audience you already have access to - so make sure you use it. And if they need an incentive - give them one! It will be a win-win.
We hope this helps! As always feel free to join the conversation or ask questions in the comments box below.
And in the meantime, we hope you have an Amazing Day!
Have a great day! 😃
